History and Company Summary

Great Lakes Landscape Design was established in 1989 by Ivan Katz. Initially, Great Lakes focused on annual and perennial planting, monthly bed maintenance and landscape renovations for residential and commercial properties.

In our third year, we purchased the accounts and equipment of a residential lawn maintenance company. That year, Great Lakes Landscape Design built a residential customer base of 130 homes and added pruning, weeding, spring/fall clean-ups, and turf management services. The move to full service maintenance helped establish the company’s name in the marketplace.

Our residential base soon grew to 275 customers and additional commercial contracts with a multi-unit company were established. We added snow removal and salting services to provide customers with more complete, year-round exterior maintenance.

Our fifth year brought an expanded focus on landscape design and construction. We purchased our first loader and full-size dump truck. Our brick paver work began in 1994 and we were won our first full, new construction landscape installation. In 1997-1998, we entered the commercial construction arena, expanded our residential installation, and added services such as low voltage lighting and fall bulbs.

We expanded our team during the 1998-1999 season with excellent, dedicated individuals, many of whom remain with us today. Landscape construction increasingly became our #1 focus.

Today, more than 10 years later, more than 70% of our business is the design, construction and enhancement of custom landscapes. We constantly focus on bringing our customers new innovations and fresh concepts for their landscapes. We operate “green,” recycling all materials possible to help strengthen our environment and reduce our carbon footprint.

As we look forward, our goals continue to focus on serving the commercial and residential landscape markets.
